After finishing school in 1991 Derrin worked for former European Tour Star Vaughan Somers at Gold Coast Burleigh Golf Club through until 2000.
During this time Derrin had a distinguished amateur record.

In 2004 Derrin worked at the Kosaido International Golf Club, Düsseldorf, Germany before returning to Australia to commence his traineeship at Indooroopilly Golf Club in 2005
