Later this year, Royal Queensland will be hosting its first Trainee Pro-Am to be contested on the New Course. The event was last played in 2004 before the Club commenced construction on the new championship layout. In recognition of his contributions to Royal Queensland and the game of golf, the Ossie Moore Cup has been created and will be won by the trainee with the lowest 36 hole score. A perpetual trophy will be kept in the Pro Shop at Royal Queensland, with the winner receiving a smaller version of the trophy.
On almost every Monday, from February through November, a trainee pro-am is contested at various golf clubs from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast, and west to Toowoomba. Trainees travel from all over the state, some as far as Mackay, to compete in these events and gain the experience of playing for money. Most Mondays, trainees have the option to play in the morning or afternoon, or may play both rounds. Participation in a number of these events are a compulsory requirement to complete the PGA Traineeship.
The Royal Queensland event will be contested over 36 holes, which means that all trainees will be required to play both the morning and afternoon rounds. A long drive competition for the trainees will be held between the two rounds. Comedian Fred Lang, a long time supporter of trainee golf professionals, will be the guest MC for the long drive competition which will add some excitement to the day.
With the support of Paul Norris from the Norris Motor Group, and a number of members of Royal Queensland Golf Club, the purse for the event is expected to reach $10,000 for the trainees. Further support however is still required in order to reach this target. Amateur participation in the afternoon pro-am field will further assist in raising the purse for the event.
An event such as this does not succeed without amateur participation. The amateurs will play for a number of fantastic prizes from companies such as Titleist, Taylor Made, Adidas, Ping and Oakley. Noosa Springs Resort has provided vouchers for complimentary rounds of golf and day spa sessions, and RQ member Francis Domenech will provide two dinner vouchers valued at $200 each to dine at his restaurant Baguette. Rudy Gorkic of Bodywize Portside will also provide a number of vouchers for the gym and day spa.
